Caffeine (price: free)

Available in the App Store

Prevent your Mac from going to sleep.

I have found this to be a very handy utility application that I use time to time to prevent my Mac from going to sleep or hibernation or of putting up a screensaver. I find that there are times when I am multi-tasking and may step away from my Mac for a few minutes and don’t want it to go to sleep and I’ll have to enter my password to wake it up again. Granted this is only in the safety of my home. It is not a good move to leave your laptop unlocked when you step away in public as then anyone could gain access to everything.

In my case I may be spending time typing a blog or creating an audio book (future app recommendation coming) and not want to keep logging into my laptop. In these cases I press command+space (I’m a keyboard short cut kind of guy) to open spotlight, begin typing caffeine and press enter (or you can click on the application) when it appears. The nice thing about the application is you can quickly select from a drop down how long you want before your Mac goes to sleep. These time vary from 5 minutes to 5 hours (and indefinitely, my choice). It runs on the menu bar and can be canceled with a simple click or quit the application entirely with a two finger tap. Let me know what you think.
