It appears that Facebook has been testing this new feature for a while now. They have rolled it out on a limited basis this week as confirmed by The Wall Street Journal. Facebook ads will auto-play in your news feed while the ad is on your screen. The video will be muted until you click on the video.
As you can guess this will be a concern to anyone with a data plan that is not unlimited (which includes most of us). As the saying goes, I have good news and bad news. Well, first the good, there is a way to turn off the auto-play feature. And the bad new, it only turns the feature off while you are on your data plan. Whenever you are on wifi, the auto-play feature will be on.
To turn this off for iOS devices navigate to Setting > Facebook.
In Facebook click on Settings.
There you will find the “Auto-play videos on WiFi only” option. Toggle the option.
On Android devices, to to App Settings from within the Facebook app, then check the box next to “Auto-play videos on WiFi only”.
