As widely report over the last couple of days, Target has reported to the Feds that they were the victim (or really, we are the victims) of a massive data breach.  By massive, I mean it was reported that the sensitive information from over 40 million credit and debit card was stolen.

Exactly what was stolen? The data that was stored on the cards magnetic strip.  This includes, customer names, card numbers, expiration dates and the security codes.  Who was affected?   Anyone who shopped in a U.S. brick and mortar Target store between Black Friday and December 15th.

Target has posted a corporate statement on their website ( corporate letter ) outlining the theft, what was taken, steps being taken to assist authorities (U.S. Secret Service) and recommendations it’s “guests” can take to uncover any fraudulent activity on their accounts (bank and credit cards) and to protect themselves going forward.

Sorry to be the barer of bad news, but the sooner everyone is aware of any security issues be they financial, data or with our computers the sooner we can take action to protect ourselves.
